Lorraine Mariam (Harmon) Ludwig passed away on January 2, 2021 at Palm Garden of Jacksonville Nursing Home.

Lorraine was born in Brookfield Township in Worth County, Iowa, on September 18, 1922, the daughter of Julius and Angie (Holstad) Harmon. She grew up on a farm near Tenold, Iowa.

She started her nursing career in Iowa, where between 1943 and 1947 she was one of 23 young women in the United States Department of Public Health Cadet Nursing Program, the first such program at the Broadlawns School of Nursing in Des Moines. Lorraine obtained her Bachelor of Science in Health Science in 1974 from California State University. Between 1978-81 she earned 16 credits towards her Masters degree at the University of South Florida.

Lorraine spent most of her professional career in nursing starting in the operating room, medical/surgical units, specialty clinics and the emergency room. She advanced to Hospital administrator, responsible for infection control, quality assurance and staff education.

Lorraine volunteered for the American Red Cross for 40 years. In 2001 she received the Clara Barton Award, the highest honor that the American Red Cross bestows upon its volunteers. The award recognizes meritorious service in volunteer leadership positions held over a period of years. Her last travel assignment was 21 days at the Liberty State Park in New Jersey during the 9/11 disaster.

June 6,1952 Lorraine married Henry S. Ludwig in Detroit, Mich. They met while on a canoe trip with friends. They began their family in Michigan, moved to California in 1962 and then to Florida in 1974, where they remained.

Lorraine enjoyed the outdoors with Henry and her children, camping, canoeing, boating and skiing. She enjoyed several types of stitchery including embroidery, quilting and she was an avid seamstress.

Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband Henry, her parents Julius and Angie, her sister Arlene and her brother Roger.

Lorraine is survived by her 3 children, daughter Diana, sons Nicholas and Keith (Dawnie) and grandson Mangus.
