Shirley Porter Koerbel

February 26, 2020

Shirley Koerbel, age 81, died peacefully on February 26, 2020.
She was a beloved mother to her three daughters: Lynn Koerbel
(Annie Bissett), Elaine Moyer (Randy Moyer), and Tami Matson
(Rick Matson); and grandmother to her six grandchildren: Seth
Moyer, Sophia Auclair (Cameron), Jillian Matson, Cory Matson,
Mitchell Matson, and Evelyn Matson. Shirley was born in
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in April 1938. She was the oldest of
four- big sister to her three younger brothers Larry Porter, Lee
Porter, and Glen Porter. It was in Pittsburgh where she met and
married her true love, Wally Koerbel. They moved to Vienna,
Virginia to raise their family when the girls were quite young.
Shirley was very happily married to Wally for 59 wonderful years
before he passed in October 2016. Shirley was a Montessori
teacher for 17 years before retiring and moving to Edenton, North
Carolina. She and Wally moved several more times after that.
Home was wherever they lived together, and they made dear
friends everywhere they lived. Shirley was a woman of great faith
and enjoyed time with her grandchildren. She was a true Dog
Whisperer, and all the family dogs gravitated to her. She loved to
read, knit, and “dig in the dirt.” She is most certainly reunited in
Heaven with Wally, family and friends, laughing and singing
around a bonfire.
Memorial donations may be made to a
community hospice of your choice. Cards of condolence can be sent to Elaine Moyer at 5462 Arborcrest Ct., Fleming Island, FL 32003.

  1. Dear sis,
My fervent prayer is I may one day sit by the ring fire with you and Wal sharing a beer and good times and laughs again. And let's go back to the old Hickory Nut for a barbecue. Although my heart is broken that you're gone from this world, I am grateful your pain is gone and your girls' pain is softly being removed day by day. Love you forever Big Sis.
