Steven Garten

Steve Garten passed away on Saturday, October, 19, 2019 in Gainesville, Florida after suffering a devastating stroke. Steve was surrounded by his family who shared their favorite stories of Steve. He was the son of Max and Ruth (Gamec) Garten. Loving husband to Emily (Brodbeck) Garten, Father to Bethany (Kurt) Bohlmann and Rebecca (Karl) Kondor and Bapa to Lane Bohlmann. He is also survived by: Sisters Merry (Tom) Sutter, Maple Grove, MN, Cheryl (Jeff) Brooke, Peoria, AZ and Brother-in-law Alan (Karen) Brodbeck. Steve also known to some as Reno, Eisenhower and Root Root will also be forever remembered by his nephews, nieces and extended family and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Mark. Steven was a Past Potentate of El Zagal Shrine and Past Master of Shiloh Lodge in Fargo. He enjoyed riding motorcycles as part of the Director’s Staff Motor Corps. He was an avid fisherman, hunter, card player, NDSU Bison Fan, golfer and butterfly enthusiast. He was living the dream- retiring to The Villages, Florida with Emily in 2016. There they have created a community of friends from the Southside Pool, the Dakota Club and Bahia Shrine Club. He always enjoyed a good laugh. Steve never lied, but was known to embellish a story once or twice. Steve was one hell of a guy who will be missed by all, especially his family and his buddy Bingo who miss him dearly.

Emily and family, we are just heartsick to hear of Steve's passing. We just love you guys, and just smile every time we think of Steve's goofy grin and big laugh. Our deepest condolences.

I knew Steve for a short time in the scheme of thongs but during my time as Road Captain of the Corps, he was acting secretary/Treasurer of MSMCA and a huge part of its success. He was to the point yet very calming at the same time. I managed to keep in touch by tormenting him and El Zagel for always winning the obstacle and slow course at MSA competition. He set me up a time or two at our banquets to get back. I will always remember him for his kindness and friendship and making me feel welcome! My condolences to the family, he will be missed
Steve was great guy. I have so many great memories of the Garten cousins being together. Emily, hold dear to the memories and the love you shared. They will be the glue that keeps his spirit alive,
I’ll always remember our great deer hunting trips, successful and not so successful. Every trip has a memory and a story. I think of Steve often especially this time of year. He will be missed. Emily our thoughts and prayers are with you.
Steve always gave me a challenge with his crazy stories, but the first time he put on a Bison sweatshirt to watch an indoor softball game will always be a good memory for me. I know he was welcomed in heaven by a full unit of Shriner friends.
Steve will truly be missed. He was like a second father to me. I feel sorry for his family and their loss.
