In Loving Memory

Judge Thomas Manuel Elwell

(May 1, 1949-April 12, 2026)

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, cherished father, dearest grandfather, wonderful brother, friend and esteemed former lawyer and judge. His unwavering commitment to God, his family, and community touched countless lives. Thomas leaves a legacy of faith, compassion, integrity, humor, wisdom and service.

Thomas was a pillar of strength and kindness to his family, always offering guidance, support, and unconditional love. As a husband, he was a devoted partner and best friend whose love remained steadfast throughout every chapter of life. As a father, he inspired his daughters, Amanda and Lauren, to pursue their dreams while instilling the values of honesty, diligence, and empathy. As a grandfather, he shared boundless love, laughter, and treasured memories with his grandson, Delsin.

Throughout his distinguished legal career, Thomas served honorably as both a prosecutor and a County and Civil Court judge in Alachua County. He also taught Constitutional Law and instructed at the Gainesville Police Academy. He was respected for his fairness, intellect, and dedication to justice. Colleagues, clients, and all who appeared before him admired his thoughtful deliberation, thoroughness, and deep sense of responsibility.

After retiring, Thomas continued serving others through pro bono legal services. He was passionate about helping those in need and making a positive difference in their lives.

Thomas, the eldest child of Hugh and Mary Elwell, was born on May 1, 1949, and raised in the coastal city of Gloucester, Massachusetts. In the 1960s, his family relocated to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, where he attended Fort Lauderdale High School and distinguished himself as an athlete, earning letters in football as a quarterback and in track and field as a pole vaulter. Thomas earned distinguished honors at the University of South Alabama, the University of West Florida, and the University of Florida College of Law.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Linda; his daughters, Amanda and Lauren; his grandson, Delsin; and his two brothers, Robert of Blue Ridge, Georgia, and Michael of Hume, Virginia.

Thomas was reunited in God’s arms with his late parents, Mary and Hugh Elwell of Welaka, Florida, and his sister, Linda of Sunrise, Florida.

Though he is no longer with us, his memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew him. May we honor his life by carrying forward his love, wisdom, sense of humor, and unwavering sense of justice.

Crevasse’s Simple Cremation is honored to serve the Elwell family.
