Love you and miss you like crazy mom
Velma(Tootie)Jean Thomas, Age 77 formerly of Gainesville, Florida, and Union County Florida passed away on April 24, 2026. She was born on December 20, 1948, in Alachua, Florida, to Louis and Frances (Wilson) Todd and was raised in Union County, Florida.
Velma spent most of her adult life in Alachua County on the Thomas family homestead with her husband and family, She dedicated many years of service to the State of Florida at Tacachale, where she was deeply loved by those in her care. Known affectionately as “Momma Thomas,” she formed meaningful bonds with her patients, reflecting her compassionate and nurturing spirit.
Velma will be remembered as a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin, and friend. She was known for her kindness, strength, humor, and generosity. She had a deep passion for cooking, caring for others, and researching her family genealogy. Velma found her greatest joy in spending time with her family and sharing her love for Jesus.
She is survived by her son, Sherman Cornelius Thomas Jr. and his wife, Betty; her step-sons, Donald Martin Thomas of Gainesville,FL.and Jimmy Randall Thomas and his wife, Beth of Waldo,FL. and her brothers, Virgil Melvin Todd of Lacrosse,FL. and Gerald Todd of Lake Butler, FL.. She is also survived by her nephew, James “Buddy” Holder and his wife (Kelly) of Raiford,FL. she and her husband lovingly took him and raised him after the passing of her sister Martha. when Buddy was just 7 years old.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Frances Todd; her beloved husband, Sherman “Shorty” Cornelius Thomas Sr.; her step-sons, Ronald and George Andrew Thomas; and her siblings, Thelma, Martha, Johnny, James, and Alvin Todd.
Those who knew Velma will remember her honesty and straightforward nature-she never hesitated to speak her mind, and you always knew exactly where you stood with her. She touched countless lives with her warmth and generosity. Velma had a heart of gold, and her family meant everything to her. She was always there for those she loved, offering support, care, and unwavering devotion.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Details will be announced by her son, Sherman, on his Facebook page.
Velma’s memory will be cherished always, and she will remain forever in the hearts of those who loved her.
