Wayne Kern Irwin, 84, of Ocala, Florida, passed away peacefully on April 3, 2026, surrounded by his loving family.
Born on January 21, 1942, in Everett, Massachusetts, Wayne was the son of Frederick and Virginia (McClellon) Irwin. He was raised in Melrose, Massachusetts and spent much time in his family’s ancestral home of Andover, New Hampshire. Wayne carried a piece of New England with him throughout his life, settling in Cromwell, Connecticut, before enjoying his later years in Ocala, Florida.
Wayne proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a cook aboard the USS Orion and USS Fulton. Following his military service, he built a long and respected career, working with Xerox Corporation and later with the American Radio Relay League. His professional life reflected both his technical skill and his passion for Amateur Radio.
Although he had many interests and hobbies, Wayne was especially devoted to Amateur “Ham” Radio, known by his call sign W1KI. Through this passion, he connected with countless individuals around the world and formed lasting friendships. He looked forward to attending the annual Field Day event each year. He also enjoyed metal detecting and had a deep appreciation for classical music, particularly that of George Frederic Handel. Wayne was a gifted storyteller; while he penned many short stories over the years, he was most proud of the novel he wrote in recent years, Katy O’Malley. Wayne was an active member of the First Congregational Church in Cromwell, Connecticut for many years. His faith and community were important parts of his life.
Wayne is survived by his beloved wife, Louise (Reynolds); his daughters, Laura and Rebecca; and his cherished granddaughter, Emma. He also leaves behind many close cousins and dear friends who will miss him greatly. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan (Read) and by his brother, Bruce.
Donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Wayne had a big impact on my life, he helped teach me everything I know about amateur radio, taking me to gatherings in Portland, Deerfield NH for the radio swap and several Field Days. I send my condolences to the whole family, Wayne was a great man whose knowledge he was eager to share.
