William G Lewis

May 12, 2020

It is with great sadness that the family of William Gerard Lewis announces his passing following his battle with Esophageal cancer on May 12, 2020, at the age of 56.  He was born March 12, 1964 in Gary, Indiana to Albert Edward Lewis and Edna Frances Lewis.

First and foremost, Bill was a dedicated husband to Lani Jo. He treasured her with every breathe he took and every gesture he made. He spoke often of how proud he was of her strength, love, and support. He knew that words could not express how much love he had for her and that she was his true soulmate and partner in life.

Bill was a loving father to his stepson Scott. He was an extraordinary example to his grandchildren Kyla and Jacob, embracing every moment he spent with them. He was a devoted brother to Margaret, Albert, and Karen. They had a close relationship and the extensive love they shared was unlike any other between siblings.

Bill was a U.S. Army Veteran and a career businessman. He started at Walts Auto Parts in the late 70s, which led him to The Parts House based in Jacksonville, Florida.  He managed many of their satellite offices throughout the United States, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and New Orleans. He eventually became a managing partner for his company prior to losing his battle with cancer.

Bill will be forever remembered to friends and family alike for his utmost integrity, caring heart, loving embrace and unconditional love.  Although our hearts are heavy, we will celebrate his life and find comfort that he is in heaven watching over us.

Bill is survived by his wife of 27 years, Lani Jo, their son Scott Melton (Sirena), his mother Edna Lewis, his brothers and sisters Margaret Rose Lewis-Bilas (Tony), Christine Rose (d), Albert E Lewis Jr. (Jaynie), Karen Ann Galligher (Stewart), his grandchildren Kyla and Jacob Melton, his nieces and nephews Ryan, Amy Krell (Brad), Garett, Alan, Michael McKenzie (Christy), April Preston (Nathan); and by numerous extended family and friends he loved and touched deeply.

Donations can be made to Community Hospice and Palliative Care.

  1. Dearest Billy,

Tonight, three days since you won your battle with cancer and attained the highest prize, eternal life, my heart is torn with emotion- primarily joy, selfishness and thanksgiving.

Last Sunday we said goodbye. When we arrived you were in and out of sleep. Much of what was said was meant for your ears only. Tony, as always, stood quietly at my side. He and I began to pray the Lords Prayer. Suddenly I heard your voice softly join ours- “Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done.” We finished and ever so slowly you blessed that cancer wracked body- now just a shell of the giant you’ve always been. Then we said our last words- “love you brother…”. “Love you sis.”

So God’s will has been done- you have joined our Sad, Grandparents and Uncle. You met my son, Steven, before I did, and were the first to see my  Christine since she and I said our goodbyes 11 years ago.

I love the passage from the Old Testament book of Wisdom: 7:7-14

But the righteous one, though he die early, shall be at rest.

For the age that is honorable comes not with the passing of time,
nor can it be measured in terms of years.

Rather, understanding passes for gray hair,
and an unsullied life is the attainment of old age.

The one who pleased God was loved, living among sinners, was transported—

Snatched away, lest wickedness pervert his mind
    or deceit beguile his soul….
Having become perfect in a short while,
    he reached the fullness of a long career;
for his soul was pleasing to the LORD”

In our family, regardless of time, you have always been and will always be “the baby,” (mom’s name for you and said in a Bahaonian accent”  so I close with the words from my daughters favorite book, slightly revised.

“Love you forever, like you for always. As long as we’re living, the baby you’ll be”

  2. Gonna miss my buddy, lots of golf, racing and hanging out. Take care “ Snapper”. Lost a great guy….
